New Research Raises Alarm
Common Sweetener Sucralose Could Harm DNA and Cause Gut Issues.
Sucralose is a man-made sweetener found in things like Splenda and is often seen as a healthier option than regular sugar. But, some research suggests it may not be as safe as we thought.
Scientists at North Carolina State University have discovered that when our bodies break down sucralose, a harmful chemical called sucralose-6-acetate is produced. This chemical could be harmful to our DNA.
They tested this theory by putting human blood cells in a dish with sucralose-6-acetate. They found that this chemical broke down the DNA in these cells.
The scientists also put sucralose-6-acetate on human gut tissue and saw that it, along with sucralose, caused "leaky gut." This means that the gut's wall becomes more open, which lets stuff that should be removed from our bodies leak into our blood. They also found that these chemicals damaged the spots where the cells in our gut wall connect to each other.
In addition, they studied the genes in gut cells to see how they acted when sucralose-6-acetate was around. They found that cells with this chemical showed signs of stress, inflammation, and cancer-related activity.
All of this information has led to serious worries about the safety of sucralose and the chemicals our bodies make from it. The researchers think we should re-evaluate whether it's okay to use sucralose.
Sucralose is found in a lot of products we use every day, such as baked goods, drinks, gum, jello, and ice cream.
